The science behind it

Remembering to remember

Knowing a fact is one memory. Remembering to DO a thing at the right future moment is a different one, and it fails on its own schedule.

You park an intention: when X happens, do Y. Then your attention leaves to live its life.

The trigger appears while you are busy with something else. That busyness is the whole difficulty.

The intention has to fire ITSELF, uninvited. Practice strengthens exactly that firing.

Then and now

A skill once studied only in ageing research became a field of its own: the memory that fires itself, measured apart from the memory that answers questions.

Where it began

Normal aging and prospective memory

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 16, 717-726

The founding laboratory paradigm: an instruction planted early must be carried through an unrelated ongoing task and fired at a target, exactly the shape of the star job.

Current theories of prospective memory and new directions for theory development

The modern synthesis: remembering-to-remember mixes spontaneous retrieval with strategic monitoring, and which mix wins depends on how demanding the ongoing task is.

What we do and do not claim

One star job measures one moment. The forgotten form at school has many causes, and this game speaks only for these puzzles.
